  1. Microsoft Announces Word for Windows, Version 2.0, 
  2. With Features To Make Everyday Tasks Easy

  4.         LAS VEGAS -- Oct. 21, 1991 -- Microsoft 
  5. Corporation today announced MicrosoftR Word for 
  6. WindowsTM version 2.0, a major new release of the 
  7. internationally acclaimed word processor for the 
  8. Microsoft Windows operating system.  With this version, 
  9. Microsoft focused on making everyday word processing 
  10. tasks easier.  The company made extensive use of its 
  11. state-of-the-art Usability Lab to improve the usability of 
  12. all key features, including the customizable ToolbarTM, 
  13. Drag and Drop, Envelope Generator, Print Merge Helper, 
  14. and Help for WordPerfectR Users, among many others.  
  15. The new and improved features in Word for Windows v. 
  16. 2.0 can be grouped into three major areas -- easy access to 
  17. everyday tools, easy creation of great looking documents, 
  18. and easy migration for users switching from other word 
  19. processors, especially WordPerfect for DOS. 
  20.         "With dramatic usability improvements and an 
  21. innovative feature set, we expect Word for Windows 
  22. version 2.0 to have tremendous user appeal," said Mike 
  23. Maples, Microsoft senior vice president of applications.  
  24. "Users of other word processors should find the transition 
  25. to this product both easy and rewarding."

  27. Designing for Usability -- A Dramatic New Approach 
  28. to Software Design  
  29.         To optimize the usability of Word for Windows v. 
  30. 2.0, Microsoft used traditional techniques such as 
  31. listening to focus group comments, gathering feedback 
  32. >from user letters, and analyzing product support calls.  
  33. The company also used innovative "instrumented 
  34. versions," which record user tasks and keystrokes over a 
  35. period of time to learn which features are most used and 
  36. how they are used.  From the beginning, the Word for 
  37. Windows v. 2.0 development team was encouraged to 
  38. focus on end-user tasks, rather than on abstract feature 
  39. design.  The product was extensively tested throughout 
  40. the development process by real users in the Microsoft 
  41. Usability Lab which is staffed by professionals trained in 
  42. the field of cognitive psychology. 
  43.         "Microsoft's investment in studying and testing 
  44. usability has paid huge dividends," stated Walt Zilahy, 
  45. manager of office systems at Travelers Insurance 
  46. Company.  "This product reduces the complexity of high 
  47. end word processing features and brings them within the 
  48. grasp of even casual users.  It is very intuitive." 
  49.  
  50. Easy Access to Tools for Everyday Tasks 
  51.         Toolbar.  From the very first view of the product, 
  52. ease of learning and use changes are visible in the new 
  53. customizable Toolbar.  The features represented by 
  54. buttons on the Toolbar were selected as a direct result of 
  55. studies on instrumented versions.  Now most needed 
  56. features such as indenting a paragraph, spell checking and 
  57. envelope creation are just a click away. 
  58.         "The expanded Toolbar has enhanced Word for 
  59. Windows ease of use, making it much more intuitive,"  
  60. stated Johnnie Nero, manager of office information 
  61. systems at Texas Instruments.  "It brings the power of the 
  62. product to the user's fingertips." 
  63.         Drag and Drop.  Microsoft Word for Windows v. 
  64. 2.0 is the first major word processor to let a user "drag 
  65. and drop" text.  With the new Drag and Drop feature, 
  66. users can move words, sentences and even paragraphs by 
  67. just clicking on highlighted text and dragging it to its new 
  68. location.  This feature simplifies the cut-and-paste method 
  69. found in most Windows-based word processors and makes 
  70. text editing easier than ever before. 
  71.         "It is obvious Microsoft really did their homework 
  72. regarding usability," stated Greg Friedman, director of 
  73. information services at Southern California Edison.  "For 
  74. example, the ability to select and drag text is a feature that 
  75. is not only a pleasure to use, but the time we save 
  76. producing and editing documents is clearly identifiable." 
  77.         Envelope Generator.  Creating envelopes is a task 
  78. that, until now, most people have done on a manual 
  79. typewriter. With the new Envelope Generator in Word for 
  80. Windows v. 2.0, addresses are automatically taken from a 
  81. document, positioned correctly and printed on the 
  82. envelope. 
  83.         Print Merge Helper.  One of the most often used 
  84. yet cumbersome word processing tasks is producing form 
  85. letters for custom mailings.  To make this process easier, 
  86. Microsoft created a new visual Print Merge Helper that 
  87. guides the user through the merge process step by step.  
  88. This feature is the result of extensive usability testing. 
  89.         Bullets.  With Word for Windows v. 2.0 it is easy 
  90. to create and apply bullets to any list.  Users can select 
  91. >from a bullet palette of more than a hundred bullets, 
  92. including standard business bullets and more specialized 
  93. symbols such as hearts and arrows.  Users can also easily 
  94. control the amount by which they indent their text and see 
  95. it in a sample box before applying it. 
  96.         Grammar Checker.  One of the most requested 
  97. new features was a grammar checker.  Microsoft added 
  98. one, based on Houghton Mifflin technology, and fully 
  99. integrated it into Word for Windows v. 2.0. 
  100.         Graphical File Finder.  The new File Finder 
  101. allows users to see long file names, the subject, or 
  102. contents of a document on screen before opening it.  
  103. Users can also search using other criteria such as the date 
  104. a file was created or saved.  This valuable tool can 
  105. dramatically cut time spent searching for documents. 
  106.         Tables.  Word for Windows v. 2.0 also simplifies 
  107. the creation and manipulation of tables.   Users simply 
  108. click on the table button on the Toolbar, visually highlight 
  109. the number of rows and columns appropriate for the table 
  110. being created, and a table appears on screen.  Users can 
  111. easily change the column width by clicking and dragging.  
  112. To move rows and columns the user simply drags and 
  113. drops them.
  114.  
  115. Easy Creation of Great Looking Documents 
  116.         WordArt.  WordArt lets users manipulate text and 
  117. fonts. Users can add excitement to their documents by 
  118. creating interesting text effects, such as curved, rotated or 
  119. even upside down text.  
  120.         Columns.  Columns are only a mouse click away 
  121. with the new column button that lets users easily change 
  122. one-column documents into multi-column documents. 
  123.         Borders and Shading.  Adding borders and 
  124. shading is now easy.  Users can choose from a wide 
  125. variety of options to get the look they want. 
  126.         Drawing.  The new drawing feature lets users 
  127. create or enhance visuals for a document.  This is 
  128. especially valuable for desktop publishing tasks.   
  129.         Charting.  With the new charting capabilities in 
  130. version 2.0, which are the same as in Microsoft Excel, 
  131. users can present data in great looking 3-D form.
  132.   
  133. Easy Move for WordPerfect Users 
  134.         Help for WordPerfect Users.  With the goal of 
  135. making it easy for WordPerfect for DOS users to 
  136. transition to Word for Windows, Microsoft has added 
  137. Help for WordPerfect Users to version 2.0.  With this 
  138. feature, the user selects a WordPerfect command from a 
  139. menu or types in a WordPerfect command they know, and 
  140. then watches as Word for Windows v. 2.0 gives 
  141. instructions or a demo of the equivalent command in 
  142. Word for Windows.  Over time, the former WordPerfect 
  143. user learns the Word for Windows commands and no 
  144. longer needs the Help feature.  This lets WordPerfect 
  145. users make an easy transition to Word for Windows. 
  146.         Easy File Conversion.  Users of version 2.0 will 
  147. find conversions to and from all major word processors, 
  148. including WordPerfect for DOS, Word for DOS, MultiMateR and 
  149. WordStarR.

  151. Other New Features 
  152.         Object Linking and Embedding.  New object 
  153. linking and embedding (OLE) capabilities let a user 
  154. embed information from any Windows application that 
  155. supports OLE.  For example, if a user embeds a 
  156. worksheet from Microsoft Excel into a Word for 
  157. Windows document, the user can double click on the 
  158. worksheet to access Microsoft Excel. 
  159.         Multilingual Spelling Checker.  For users who 
  160. create documents in multiple languages, Word for 
  161. Windows v. 2.0 provides support for multilingual spell 
  162. checking.  The user marks the text as written in a foreign 
  163. language. Then, while the document is being spell 
  164. checked, Word for Windows automatically uses a foreign 
  165. language dictionary that corresponds to that text.  The 
  166. switch to the different speller is seamless.  Foreign 
  167. language dictionaries are available separately. 
  168.         Equation Editor.  It is easier than ever to add 
  169. equations to documents with the new graphical Equation 
  170. Editor.  This feature is especially useful for engineers and 
  171. scientists.

  173. Pricing, System Requirements and Availability 
  174.         Word for Windows v. 2.0 will be available in 
  175. November 1991 through resellers for a suggested retail 
  176. price of $495.  System requirements include:  Microsoft 
  177. Windows environment version 3.0 or later; a PC using 
  178. 80286, 80386 or higher microprocessor; 2MB of memory 
  179. recommended; EGA or higher resolution monitor; 
  180. minimum installation requires 5 MB hard disk, maximum 
  181. installation (all options) requires 15 MB, one double-sided 
  182. disk drive; Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing 
  183. device recommended. 
  184.         Users of Microsoft Word for Windows and other 
  185. full-featured word processors, including WordPerfect for 
  186. DOS, Microsoft Word for DOS systems, DisplayWriteR 
  187. or MultiMate, can upgrade to version 2.0 for $129.  
  188. Users who acquired Microsoft Word for Windows version 
  189. 1.1 after Oct. 1, 1991 can upgrade for free. 
  190.         Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0 has been 
  191. localized to meet the language-specific needs of 
  192. international markets.  The English version of Microsoft 
  193. Word for Windows v. 2.0 will be available in more than 
  194. 120 countries worldwide.  French, German, French-
  195. Canadian, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, 
  196. Norwegian and Finnish versions are scheduled to be 
  197. available in the first half of 1992.  Arabic, Russian, 
  198. Czech and Hungarian versions are planned. 
  199.         Microsoft Corporation offers a complete family of 
  200. applications for Windows.  Microsoft Excel, Microsoft 
  201. Word, Microsoft PowerPointR, Microsoft Mail and 
  202. Microsoft Project are designed to work well together and
